Whenever summer season arrives, the use of air conditioners increases and electricity bills start skyrocketing. To find a solution to this problem, I created an air conditioner power calculator that helps you to accurately estimate the power consumption of your AC usage.
In this article, I will share my experience and the features of this calculator, which will prove useful for all homes and offices for power saving.
As soon as I started using the air conditioner in summer, my electricity bill started skyrocketing. To keep a tab on my expenses, I decided to track the electricity consumption of my AC. I connected my AC to a device monitor and started noting the daily consumption.
The results that came out in a few days were really surprising. My 1.5 ton split AC was consuming 12-15 units (kWh) of electricity when run for 8 hours every day.
If we look at it on a monthly basis, it was consuming around 360-450 units. In terms of electricity, the cost of one unit is around Rs 7, so my AC alone cost around ₹2520! Now I understood that 60-70% of my total electricity bill was increasing only because of the AC.
To deal with this, I adopted some methods so that I could use the AC but the bill could be reduced a little. Such as:
Increasing the temperature slightly: When I set the temperature of the AC to 24-26 degrees, there was a saving of about 10-15% in electricity consumption.
With these measures, I kept my electricity consumption under control a bit. After this whole experience, I realized that if there was an easy way to track AC consumption, many people could get better control over the electricity bill.
Inspired by this, I created an air conditioner power calculator, in which you can easily estimate the daily and monthly consumption of your AC. With this, you can know how much the AC will cost and plan your electricity budget accordingly.
This calculator works according to every country, whether you are in the US, India, UK, or any other country. If your country is not listed, you can enter your own unit cost in the ‘Other’ option. This way, you can keep a complete track of your AC costs no matter where you are!
Device Name | Units | Wattage (W) | Hours/Day | Monthly Consumption (kWh) | Yearly Consumption (kWh) | Monthly Cost | Yearly Cost | Action |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Total: | 0 kWh | 0 kWh | $0.00 | $0.00 |
This calculator is designed keeping in mind the power consumption of all types of ACs (e.g. split ACs, window ACs, large office ACs). It is pre-populated with the information of popular AC models so that the user does not have to add it again.
The table automatically adds information like wattage, daily usage hours, monthly and annual consumption (in kWh) and monthly and annual cost for each AC.
The calculator has a country selection dropdown at the top, which names major countries like the US, India, UK, Australia, etc. If your country is not in the list, you can choose the "Other" option.
Based on this country selection, the currency symbol and default electricity rates automatically change so that this tool is correct for users in every country.
In this calculator, the input of cost per unit is also given so that users can update it according to their electricity rate. As soon as the country changes, this input is also automatically filled with the average electricity rate of that country, but if you want to change it according to your needs, it can also be changed manually.
As soon as the wattage or usage hours of the AC change, the calculator immediately updates all the calculations in real-time.
This means that as soon as you make any change, you can immediately see the new estimate of monthly and yearly consumption and cost. This feature is especially helpful when you want to manage your AC usage according to your budget.
If you have different needs or want to add other devices, there is a button at the bottom to add a new device. This gives you complete freedom for your AC setup, whether it is at home or office.
The user interface of this calculator is quite clean and user-friendly. The use of borders, colors, and spacing makes it easy to read. It fits well on any screen, be it mobile or computer.
